A Terrific Thursday with Cycle Safety, a Forest Walk and Daffodil Bulbs!

12th Oct 2023

Rang a Cúig had a terrific Thursday with lots of exciting and interesting activities taking place throughout the day.

They started their morning off with a Cycle Safety Lesson with Simon from Cycle Ireland. Simon spoke to the children about road safety and how we stay safe on our bikes on the road. We discussed the impact of weather conditions, clothing and traffic. We went through various road signs and what they mean for the cyclist and the driver. We also learned how to do the ‘2,4,2’ helmet check and the ‘M’ check for our bicycles. Simon was super impressed with all the children knew about road safety and we look forward to working with him over the next 4 weeks for our outdoor bike sessions.

We were then treated to a lovely visit from Mr. Cawley. Mr. Cawley took 5th and 6th class on a walk and talk lesson around Tubbercurry! We looked at various street names, went to the old well and discussed how Tubbercurry  got its name, Tobar an Choire (Well of the Rock), looked at the old railway line and went to the Forest Walk. Mr. Cawley told all of the children about the Maiden River that runs through and under Tubbercurry and how it is a tributary of the River Moy. We also heard lots of interesting facts about the trees and plant life that can be found in the Forest Walk.

Later in the day we learned about the lifecycle of a daffodil. Everybody in 5th and 6th class got a chance to plant their very own daffodil bulb in the flower beds at the front of the school. We look forward to seeing lots of lovely, bright daffodils in the Spring time.

Well done to everyone for their excellent behaviour and listening skills throughout the day! Lots of active learning and fun was had by all!

Maith Sibh!
