School Reports and Standardised Test Scores

17th Jun 2024

School reports have been sent home for all children. This reflects some of the work your child has done in the last year. Well done to the children (and their teachers!) for all the hard work!

Children in 1st Class start Standardised TEsts. These are called Drumcondra Tests and help us to plan for supports for next year. They reflect your child's results on that test on the day
We do English, Maths and Spelling Tests

The results for children in 2nd - 6th classes are given in STen Scores. This means the score is out of 10

Children cannot prepare or study for these tests.

In general, 17% of children get a STen score from 8-10
17% will get a STen score of 7
34% will get a STen of 5-6
17% will get a STen of 4
17% will get a score from 1-3

How can you help you child?

The teachers have some suggestions on the report cards of how to improve reading and maths

Reading to your child and with your child is one of the best ways to improve reading scores. There is a lovely library in Tubbercurry. The children enjoyed trips there this year. Try and visit once a month and find some new reading books.
Encourage you child to read - books, magazines, appropriate websites, cookbooks etc
When out with younger children read signs on shop windows, signs on doors, signposts!

Use Maths every day. Young children can do counting at home - counting fruit, vegetables, cutlery etc at home
Making sets - Children can put socks in pairs after washing
Reading numbers in the shops. Counting change. Recognising money
Reading the time on the clock
Reading numbers on doors, number plates, clocks, TV remotes
Using 24 hour time when looking at TV guides, Bus timetables, Flight times
